West Coast Steiner School’s library is steadily growing, and students are enjoying their weekly lessons (and the cosy refuge when the rain is too much to play outside!). This term Class 4, 5 and 6 students have been working to create their own story books to add to the collection. To begin this project, students spent time in library classes each week looking at the features of story books. They looked at a range of books to explore different authors, styles, and techniques – finding those that they enjoyed, those that they didn’t, and deciding what kind of a book each student wanted to make. The students then began the process of planning, drafting, and editing their own books. A lot of hard work that went into this, and the finished products are beautiful – a testament to the care and effort that students have shown.

Some students finished their books in time to enter the annual Make Your Own Storybook competition held by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). One of these entries – authored by Hannah and Zaliah (Class 6) created a book for their Class 1 buddies to share the love they had for their school, and to explain what makes it so special to them. Hannah and Zaliah have crafted a gorgeous window into the world of the students at West Coast Steiner School. It is wonderful to see our students take such pride in their school, and in their own work. Being able to read the book to Class 1 in their Library lesson was a special experience – everyone at West Coast Steiner School is looking forward to more students sharing their books in the future!
