Leaning Tree Steiner School

Young Jeweller of the Year 2021

Leaning Tree Steiner School recently participated in Young Jeweller of the Year 2021, sponsored by Latitude Jewellers, which is a local business that also farm their own pearls at the Abrolhos Islands, Geraldton, Western Australia. This is the first year that LTSS have participated in the competition with their Middle School Students.

There were over 53 entries received from local schools with only 6 awards on offer. LTSS students were successful in winning 4 of the overall awards! Judging criteria covered areas such as originality, technical drawing, craftsmanship as well as overall finish and story initiative for the piece.

OVERALL WINNER – 2021 YOUNG JEWELLER OF THE YEAR
Artist Name: Jasmin Lockie
Title of Piece: Unshaped Beauty
Medium used: Abrolhos Island Pearl, Sterling Silver & Nickel
Inspiration: My piece was inspired by my Mum, as she calls me her Butterfly. I also chose a butterfly because there’s a quote that talks about them and reminds me of Me. “Butterflies can’t see how beautiful they are, even if someone tells them or shows them”
My original design was to have “me” as a butterfly and my “sister” as a dragonfly. My second design was to add my Pop’s ashes, even though he’s not here, his memory is still alive.

WINNER – PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD and CRAFTSMANSHIP AWARD
Artist Name: Edel Rodden
Title: Captured by the Sea
Medium used: Abrolhos Island Pearl and Sterling Silver
Inspiration: The inspiration for my piece was the ocean. The beach and the water is a big part of my life and is so important to me. My passion for surfing and the waves has been incorporated into my piece by all the turns and twists I’ve put into it, kind of like how the ocean flows or how the wind turns and twirls the water, creating magical waves. Family and friends are so special to me, the pearl in my piece represents the ones l love, and the curved silver protects the pearl. The way the pendent curls around like a wave washing through the calm sea.

WINNER – LEANING TREE STEINER SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AWARD
Artist Name: Holden O’Connor
Title of Piece: Lil’ Piece
Medium used: Abrolhos Island Pearl and Sterling Silver
Inspiration: I was randomly drawing and I turned it into a ring, I didn’t like the ring so I changed it up a little.
