Perth Waldorf School CLASS 11 and 12 BIOLOGY Excursion to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research
On Thursday 23rd May, the Perth Waldorf School Year 11 and 12 Biology classes went on an excursion to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The institute in Nedlands, WA is an impressive building that houses the laboratories of several renowned medical researchers, as well as offering hands-on experiences for school and community groups.
The Biology topic for this term is genetics and students have been looking at how personalised medicine, using stem cells from our own body, could overcome issues that arise from disease, nerve damage and organ failure.
At the Harry Perkins Institute, the Perth Waldorf School students were lucky enough to immerse themselves in a real working lab, using the latest equipment to culture liver stem cells to be used for research into cancer treatment.
They worked alongside microbiologists and neuroscientists who gave students an insight into their achievements and the possible careers for biology students.
It was agreed that this was a fantastic experience and one that the students would love to repeat in the future.
