Teaching Assistant – Textile/Handwork
Orana Steiner School (Orana) is an independent, co-educational and non-denominational school set in 16 hectares of unique, natural landscape in Weston, an inner south suburb of Canberra. The school was founded in 1981 and currently has students from pre-preschool to Year 12.
At Orana, the emphasis in Handwork in the primary years is on engaging the will of the child in a way that nurtures and develops a positive attitude of perseverance and enthusiasm for the task at hand. A lot of the work revolves around teaching the children classical skills of knitting, crochet and needlework.
We are currently seeking a skilled and dedicated classroom assistant to support the handwork teacher in delivering Orana Handwork curriculum to students in Years 1-4.
The handwork assistant will assist in the preparation of materials and projects for student lessons, and to be present and active in the classrooms as a co-teacher and support individual learning needs.
This position would ideally suit a person who is proficient in knitting, crochet, hand sewing, machine sewing and pattern making, and has the passion and ability to work with students of different ages in classroom settings.
This is a term-time only position commencing Term 1, 2021. The working hours will be 14 hours per week over four days. It is initially a 12-month contracted position with the prospect of an extended appointment.
- Proficiency in knitting, crochet, hand sewing, machine sewing and pattern making.
- Previous experience of working in a classroom setting.
- Qualifications in educational support will be highly regarded.
- Current or be eligible for ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication.
- Positive attitude towards children.
