Outdoor Education Teachers (Full Time)
Melbourne Rudolf Steiner School is a K-12 co-educational, non-denominational school situated in the outer eastern suburb of Warranwood. Since its beginnings in the early 1970s, MRSS has always cherished the connection between the natural world and the children within its care. As the school grew the Outdoor Education Program became more formalised with camps across most year levels, with a focal point being an extended multi-camp program in Year 9. The primary ethos of connection with the natural world has remained unchanged over this time and has been driven by a dedicated team of Outdoor Education Teachers.
We now find ourselves in the position of forming a new team and are seeking extraordinary candidates to continue this work. Historically we have offered an extensive place-oriented program, provided to children as a cohesive sequence of trips from Class 3 through to Year 11. We utilise a variety of activities (including bushwalking, canoeing, surfing, rock climbing and cycling) to engage deeply with a wide variety of different places through a mobile program. Whilst the existing program is outstanding in its scope and fulfillment of our basic values, we embrace the fact that a new team will undoubtedly bring change.
We are seeking applications from qualified Outdoor Education Teachers for a full-time position on a one-year contract, with a view to becoming an ongoing position, subject to review. A Wilderness First Aid qualification is mandatory, as is a heavy vehicle license or the willingness to obtain one. Candidates should share our inclusive nature-based ethos and be excited by the opportunities this role presents. Knowledge of the creation of risk assessment and risk registers concerning camps and outdoor education journeys is also important. Candidates must be willing to work collaboratively with the Outdoor Education team and with the broader school to nourish and enhance this program. A knowledge of, or interest in developing an understanding of Steiner education is necessary. The position entails a combination of days in the bush with some organisational and administrative work back at school.
We are seeking up to three Outdoor Education Teachers and we envisage that within this new Outdoor Education team their shared skill set would include combinations of:
- Bushwalking
- Canoeing
- Rock Climbing
- Bike Touring
- Snorkelling
- Surfing
The position will commence at or before the start of 2024 depending on the successful applicants.
Applicants must have a sound understanding of, and commitment to, current Child Safety Outdoor Standards. Only people with the right to work in this country may apply for this position.
Applications should be sent with a cover letter and current CV including the names and contact details of two referees, by Tuesday 10th October, 5pm.
