WHAT IS BOTHMER GYMNASTICS?

In 1921 Fritz von Bothmer was asked by Rudolf Steiner to develop the gymnastic education at the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart. Bothmer was targeted with formulating a movement curriculum that met and supported the children at each stage of their development.

Bothmer Gymnastics teaches specific movements, games and exercises for different ages. These exercises include jumping rhythms, wooden stave work with balances, footwork and throwing rhythms, roundelays (movement to a rhythmic verse) and movement sequences that are used to grow the will and physical body, and to strengthen the spiritual being of the child.

In a typical lesson, the Bothmer exercises are interwoven with games, athletics and gymnastics, designed for each particular age group.

Bothmer Gymnastics curriculum is introduced in class 3 when the students are beginning to awaken in themselves and their relationship to their physical body and the outer world is becoming clearer.

Bothmer Gymnastics explores, refines and strengthens our relationship to the great geometric planes and forces in which we all stand and orient ourselves on earth.
